Marcus Garvey once said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

Through simple language, the use of innovative coloring activities and providing children the opportunity to practice cursive writing and add their own thoughts, feelings and outlooks, Wint informs young readers on Garvey’s empowering teachings. “Marcus Garvey is a monumental, internationally acclaimed black philosopher who has influenced the independence movement of every black nation in the world,” Wint explains.

Eleanor Wint is a retired professor of social work who started her career with a certificate in social work and soon moved on to gain a bachelor’s degree in applied social studies, a master’s degree in social work (research) and doctorate in sociology.

She is well-known for her work with developing communities and families in different parts of the world as well as organizing international seminars and community-based action rallies for youth unification. She has published two books on Marcus Garvey in collaboration with the Institute of Jamaica, several social work texts and “Bob Marley the Man & His Music” together with Carolyn Cooper.

Her undying interest in the teaching of Marcus Garvey led to this book, as she feels many persons of African heritage still have a great deal to learn about this great black philosopher.

We have the chance to interview Eleanor Wint on her children’s educational activity book, ‘Marcus Teaches Us’

Describe your book in 5 powerful words

Empowering; colourful; educational; entertaining; creative

As an African woman, a mother figure what is the message you are sending out to our kids?

You can have fun learning about yourself and your history. Marcus Teaches Us is a book which educates children using simple prose and play. The activities help the children to expand on their knowledge of the world, hone their motor skills and enjoy reading and writing.

The message to the kids is, as you enjoy the activities, your Mom, Aunt, Dad, teacher, Gogo, Nana, grandmother will all be there to help you and give you some great tips about yourself and your history. It’s your book, your work, so feel good about yourself.

Why a children’s book? Have you considered targeting adolescents or adults?

There is so much happening in the children’s environment today as they develop. Look at the recent school shootings. This negative sense of self didn’t happen now. No. It developed over time. Research shows that children having this positive self-esteem in the preschool years (3-6 years of age) are not usually involved in deviant and anti-social behavior later.

I concentrate on children because Children need to have self-confidence and high, positive self-esteem when they are as this age as this is the strength that will never wear off no matter what. Clearly we have the responsibility to do whatever we can to strengthen their feeling about themselves, their history and their culture so as to enable them to fight against the negative racial stereotypes and not fall by the wayside.

What is the place of the Black (African) child in our society?

Happy and successful. They need to have their own strong family that they can always relate to and learn their history.

Would a white, Asian, Hispanic child relate to this book?

YES. The activities are so diverse the learning can cross all ethnicities. This is not just a black book. It is a children’s book.

We celebrated yet another Martin Luther King while ago, how far do you think we have come in our society?

We still have a long way to go. 400 years of slavery cannot be erased in a short passage of time.

Thank you Éleanor.

Thank for this. Peace.

What is the place of the Black (African) child in our society?

Thank for this. Peace.
